I am Laura Davis and I run a web development business from home called D3 Solutions. I have been a solopreneur for over 15 years. I am passionate about sharing my expertise in the areas of WordPress and Website Marketing as well as how to achieve great work / life balance by being more productive and organized.
Please join me as I walk with you on this journey of working from home by building a successful business while being a wife and mother.
How did you get started?
My dad used to take me to set up computers with him from the age of 12. That is when I started to love computers. In college while I was studying Computer Science, I worked for a web development firm even though I knew nothing about creating websites. After I worked there for about 6 months, I decided to branch out on my own. That is when I started freelancing. My first clients had no idea how scared I was and how I really had no clue what I was doing. After college, I had a few jobs working in various offices doing web development which was nice, but I really enjoyed working at home and being my own boss. After we moved back from the mission field in Germany, I needed to make some money so I started my freelance business back up in Charlotte where I currently live. At the time, I had a 9 month old baby girl and I needed to be home for her. My business slowly grew and so did my daughter. She's now 7 - but more on my family in a minute. I am a firm believer in slow and steady growth - it's the tortoise who wins the race. If my business took off over night, I would not have the systems in place or the mental capacity to handle it. As my knowledge and my expertise grew, so did my client base. And now I have a thriving business with clients I love who keep coming back because they know I am a hard worker who does a professional job every time.
What is your business?
It is called D3 Solutions and I create websites for small businesses, nonprofits, ministries and solopreneurs using WordPress. I truly believe there isn't a website out there that can't be built with WordPress - it's such a powerful content management system. My hope is that you'll come to love WordPress as much as I do through Solopreneur Mentor. I also offer WordPress hosting and maintenance packages because I've found that some people just don't want to deal with hosting and maintaining their WordPress sites. It's important to note that I'm a developer and not a designer. A designer creates the design for websites and a developer creates the code. I create code, but I also have a lot of design experience since web development is so creative in nature. I do a little of both, but I definitely feel more comfortable with code.
What makes you qualified to be my mentor?
There are SO.MANY.PEOPLE on the web trying to make themselves heard. I have a passion for helping moms grow a successful business from home. I also have a passion for ensuring you don't spend an entire day creating a button for your website (true story - happened to a client of mine). I have a Master's in Computer Science from Boston University because I love to teach. I facilitate online courses for the Master's level web development courses at Boston University which has been so much fun. But my true love is to help people like you - busy moms who just can't do it all, but are desperately trying. After 15 years of running a successful business from home, I have some advice to offer and organizational, productivity and technology tips to share.
What's your family like?
I want you first to know that my family life is different than your's and as such, you have to adapt your business goals appropriately. I have a 7 year old daughter and a 2.5 year old son. There is quite an age gap and that didn't happen on purpose, but I'm grateful for that gap and the opportunity to be home with my son at this time. He attends preschool 3 days a week for 4 hours a day and he naps in the afternoon. I say that to show you how much concentrated time I have to work - about 18-20 hours of kid-free time. My husband is a teacher and he's home everyday by 4p. I say that to show that my family work / life balance only works because my husband is home more than most husbands are. He's also very supportive of my role as business owner and helps out a lot around the house. If you want to run a successful business from home, the entire family has to be on board. I am very blessed that is the case for me.
Why did you start this blog?
Now you're asking the right question! I had an "ah-ha" moment when a friend asked me to sit down with her and go over her current website and make recommendations on how to go about redoing it. I realized that I have a lot of information crammed in my brain that I can offer and really want to offer! I have a passion for solopreneurs, especially women, because I've been a solopreneur for so long now and I know what it's like to work at home and be a mom and wife. It's hard and that's why I started this blog - to create a community where we can grow our businesses together and support one another in the process as wives and mothers. My hope is that I can help shave off some very valuable time off your day as I share my best secrets so you can spend more time with your family. Simple as that.
Testimonials from Current Client Solopreneurs
Bringing Laura in as part of my team was one of the best decisions I made last year, and I wish I would have found her sooner! Three years into my life as a coach and solopreneur, I was completely buried in all the technical aspects of running my business, and found that the content side—the side that really impacts lives—was suffering. Laura’s approach is disarming, collaborative and extremely responsive. She provides very clear and consistent communication, and I have been blown away by her knowledge and “magic” she has performed in the tech side of my business!Becky Hammond

When growing your business there are just some things you can’t leave the chance. The security and hosting of your website is one of them – particularly if you accept credit cards online. I also consider the backend work to a website another area I don’t want to leave to chance. I’ve heard horror stories of people losing their website in moments because they pushed one wrong button and didn’t have a back-up of the site. For all of these reasons I have Laura as part of my team. She’s trustworthy, reliable and can quickly assess your situation and make crazy smart recommendations. I may be a solopreneur but I don’t go it alone. I bring in the right expertise, guidance and support that my business needs and you should too.Stacey Brown Randall
